Filopappou hill, or the hill of the Muses, as it was known in antiquity, is located across the Acropolis and offers a stunning view of the Parthenon. It is considered ideal for walking, due to its picturesque cobbled paths and historical monuments.
The area took its name after the Filopappou monument, a monument built by the Athenians at the top of the hill to commemorate the Syrian ruler philhellene Filopappos.
The handcrafted cobblestone paths constructed by Pikionis, lead to the monuments of the hill and the church of St. Dimitrios Loumpadiaris. The downward path leads to the foot of Pnyx, a place where the Athenian citizens gathered in antiquity. At the south side of the hill one will come across the Dora Stratou Theatre, where cultural events take place frequently.
